As regular readers may know, although I’m a relatively recent convert, I’m a huge fan of Blackberry but, as I previously wrote, I was recently without one after an accident involving some coffee. Although it was always likely I’d eventually opt for another Blackberry, my mid-contract status gave me a reason to look at a cheaper clone.

eXpansys are now offering the HTC Hero off network for £399.99 and are promising buyers £30 worth of eXpansys vouchers to spend on accessories for their new phone.

A lot of people have been excitedly touting the new HTC Hero as an iPhone killer but I’m not convinced. It has an obvious advantage over the iPhone in that it’s going to be available in the UK from both Orange and T-Mobile, but although it’s not quite as ugly as the G1, it retains that dreadful ‘chin’ from the earlier model and still looks functional rather than stylish.

Like probably most other iPhone users I consider O2’s to tethering charges more than a little greedy but when my T-Mobile broadband failed earlier today I thought I’d give O2 a try  so I could at least compare the two.
The resulting conversation didn’t go well, first I was told it’s impossible to add tethering ‘same [...]

It’s clear there’s a lot of people unhappy at the upgrade policy of O2 for the iPhone 3G. The network currently wants everyone with an iPhone 3G to pay off their current contracts if they want to upgrade to one of the new 3Gs models. I say ‘currently’ because it seems the UK launch is being marred by some pretty negative headlines and I can’t help but think Apple will soon step in and a change of heart will be announced.

In early April I called my old mobile provider to ask if I could renew my contract that day, only to be told I had to wait two more days to reach my upgrade point. No big deal, except I’d previously killed my Blackberry and was going away so really needed to be able to check my mail while I was out and about.

Admittedly I’m a bit behind with his post, but am I the only person who found the long awaited ‘cupcake’ update for Google’s Android OS pretty under whelming? It certainly delivered everything which was expected (mostly basic features which should have always been present in a smartphone) but the result, at least in my view, is still a pretty unimpressive OS which looks far too ugly and lacks any ‘must have’ features.

Orange has become the first UK network to offer the BlackBerry Curve 8900 smartphone to Pay As You Go customers. Retailing at £249.99, the 8900 follows Orange’s previous launch of a PAYG BlackBerry Pearl 8120.
