The white MacBook, a great value purchase
Apple's entry-level laptop may lack the features of its shiny siblings but it boasts much wanted features the more expensive models don't.

Guardian releases paid-for news iPhone app
I’m a big fan of the Telegraph and Sky news iPhone apps, both offer a great breadth of coverage for free. But they have a new rival in the guide of the Guardian’s new paid-for app (asking price £2.39) which launched today. Before commenting on the app itself I want to say a few words in support of the Guardian’s decision to charge. Software development, like news gathering, costs... [Read more]
Great new apps on my iPhone
Two great new apps have found their way to my iPhone in recent days. First up is an updated version of the Telegraph newspaper’s app which now boasts access to photo galleries, Twitter trending keywords and, most importantly, a faster user interface. I’ve always been a big fan of the Telegraph’s app but the refreshed version is a marked improvement and delivers on the promised faster... [Read more]
Devices which never quite made it – The T-Mobile Ameo / HTC Advantage
Rummaging around in my drawers a few days ago I stumbled upon what has to be the ultimate ‘nearly’ gadget, my seldom used T-Mobile Ameo (or the HTC Advantage or HTC Athena, take your pick). I got mine on a pretty expensive contract and for a while I loved using the device, the large 5″ screen was impressive even if it was crippled by a fairly low resolution, the built-in 3G connectivity... Is Google really launching a mobile phone?
Now, for most of my tech-using life computers and other devices have largely tended to come with proprietary software coded by, or for, the hardware manufacturer but I’m a little puzzled by reports that Google will soon start shipping their own Android-powered mobile handset. As a current Mac and iPhone user I’m pretty much sold on the advantages of the same firm making or commissioning... [Read more]
Switching to MacBook Pro
I love my White MacBook and I’m sure if it was able to express such emotions it’d love me too, but being of the non-unibody variety it’s had a couple of casing related issues (the latest being sorted by Apple as I type) which have made me realise it’s not sufficiently robust for my needs. With neither the new white unibody MacBooks and MacBook Air not including firewire ports and the 13”... [Read more]
Installing my 3G modem under Snow Leopard
I’ve recently moved from my white MacBook to a 13” MacBook Pro and – as many people warned me beforehand – I encountered a bit of hassle installing my drivers for my T-Mobile 3G stick (the black and pink plastic model) under the new machine’s Snow Leopard. By the time you read this it’s possible T-Mobile have an updated driver but the last time I called in no-one would own up to... [Read more]
Opera Mobile 10 for Nokia unveiled
European browser developer Opera today unveiled the beta of their Opera Mobile 10 software for Nokia and other Symbian/S60 powered devices. The latest version introduces the ‘Speed Dial’, tabbed browsing and a password manager and is optimized for both touchscreen and keypad use. “Today’s powerful smartphones deserve an equally powerful browser, like Opera,” said Jon von Tetzchner,... Let the Storm 2 be the last iPhone-a-like handset
As I’ve written before, I’m a great Blackberry fan but like many lovers of the ‘email on the move’ device I was less than impressed with what I saw of the Blackberry Storm. Admittedly my experiences were limited to playing around with friends phones but I was deeply unimpressed with the build quality and the touchscreen experience left a lot to be desired. Reviews for the Storm... [Read more]
